1. ANDY MURRAY WINS EPIC US OPEN FINAL
Andy Murray ended Britain's 76-year wait for a male Grand Slam singles champion with an epic victory over Novak Djokovic in the US Open final in New York late last night. In a five-set cliffhanger, the 25-year-old Scot won 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 to take the title. "It means the world to me," he said afterwards.

2. NEW WITNESS IN ANNECY KILLINGS
A new witness to the killing of the al-Hilli family in Annecy has come forward. The French hiker told Le Parisien newspaper that his car was waved down by the British cyclist who discovered the bodies. He said he visited the scene and then called the emergency services. French police are confident Zainab, 7, now out of a coma, can remember what happened.

3. 4G MOBILE NETWORK LAUNCHED
British mobile phone users will soon be able to use fourth generation mobile broadband, also known as 4G. EE (formerly Everything Everywhere) announced the launch of their superfast mobile service at an event at London’s Science Museum today. The company, known to phone users as Orange and T-Mobile, says that by Christmas 40 per cent of the UK population will be covered by 4G.

4. WHERE IS CHINESE LEADER XI JINPING?
There is mystery over the health and whereabouts of Xi Jinping, the man expected to become the next leader of China. The 59-year-old was last seen in public at a Communist Party training academy on 1 September and in the last week has cancelled meetings with dignitaries including US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

5. OFQUAL ‘ORDERED GCSE GRADE CHANGES’
Ofqual, the exams watchdog, ordered the Edexcel board to change its English GCSE grade boundaries shortly before this year’s exams, letters leaked to the Times Educational Supplement revealed. Teachers complained that GCSE grades dropped for the first time in 24 years, but Ofqual argues that it has a duty to maintain standards.
6. TUC T-SHIRTS HAIL DEATH OF THATCHER
Souvenir T-shirts hailing the death of Baroness Thatcher were being sold for £10 yesterday at the TUC annual congress in Brighton by the official union affiliate the Derbyshire Unemployed Workers centre, scandalising Conservative MPs who called for Labour leader Ed Milliband to “disassociate” himself from the TUC. One T-shirt carried the slogan “Hey-Ho the Witch is Dead”.

7. 9/11 CANCER VICTIMS WIN HEALTH RIGHTS
On the anniversary of 9/11, the US government has agreed to add 50 types of cancer to the list of illnesses covered by free treatment and monitoring. Some 1,000 deaths among emergency workers and survivors of the World Trade Center attack 11 years ago today have been attributed to the toxic dust spewed by the wreckage at ground zero.
8. BESTIVAL GOERS DIE IN COACH CRASH
Three people were killed just before midnight on Monday when a coach returning to Merseyside from Bestival on the Isle of Wight left the A3 near the Hindhead Tunnel in Surrey and crashed into a tree. The coach was run by Merseypride Travel. No other vehicle was involved. Injured survivors were taken to a number of hospitals.
9. WILLIAM AND KATE IN SINGAPORE
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have landed in Singapore for a nine-day tour of the region in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Today they will attend the naming of an orchid in their honour. William's mother Diana was due to have an orchid named for her in 1997, but was killed in Paris just weeks before her Singapore visit.
10. HOT TICKET: CHINESE ART AT THE HAYWARD
A new exhibition of contemporary Chinese art, titled ‘Art of Change: New Directions from China’, has opened at the Hayward Gallery to fabulous reviews. The show features performance installations among other ultra-modern turns. “Fascinating”, says The Sunday Times. Until 9 December.
