1. DPP TO INVESTIGATE CPS OVER SAVILE CLAIMS

The Director of Public Prosecutions is to investigate why the CPS chose not to prosecute Jimmy Savile over four sex abuse allegations in 2009. Earlier, Tory MP Sir Roger Gale, a former director of current affairs at the BBC, said BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten and Director-General George Entwistle might have to resign over the affair.

2. MP ALLEGES NO. 10 'PAEDOPHILE NETWORK'

Labour MP Tom Watson has asked Prime Minister David Cameron to ensure that the police investigate evidence of a “powerful paedophile network linked to Parliament and Number 10”. The allegations might refer to a claim made by former Conservative minister Edwina Currie that Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's PPS Sir Peter Morrison was a "noted pederast".

3. PRICE COMPLAINTS AS iPAD MINI LAUNCHED

Apple yesterday unveiled its widely-anticipated miniature tablet, the iPad Mini, 7.2mm thick and weighing 0.3kg, making it 23% thinner and 53% lighter than the latest iPad launched this summer. The base wifi-only model, available in the UK next week, will cost £269, which critics pointed out is £100 more than its rivals.

4. BID TO UNSEAL ROMNEY DIVORCE TESTIMONY

Lawyers for the Boston Globe are to ask a judge today to unseal testimony given by Mitt Romney in a "messy" divorce case involving one of his major supporters, Staples co-founder Tom Stemberg and Stemberg's first wife, Maureen. Gossip site TMZ says the Globe was tipped off that the sealed documents contain "juicy information about Romney".

5. NINE ARRESTED OVER CHILD SEX CHARGES

Nine men from Rochdale, Greater Manchester, were yesterday charged with sexual offences including rape committed separately against one teenage girl between 2008 and 2009. The victim was identified in the "grooming" investigation which led to a different group of nine men being jailed at Liverpool Crown Court this summer.

6. STARS TURN OUT FOR SKYFALL PREMIERE

Daniel Craig declared himself "incredibly proud" to be playing James Bond in the new film Skyfall which premiered in London last night on the 50th anniversary of the first film, Dr No, in 1962. Stars including Dame Judi Dench greeted Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall for the world premiere at the Albert Hall.

7. BETTISON QUITS AMID HILLSBOROUGH PROBE

Sir Norman Bettison, one of the senior police officers being investigated by the IPCC over the Hillsborough disaster cover-up, has resigned as chief constable of West Yorkshire Police. At the time of the disaster he was an inspector with South Yorkshire Police and was part of a liaison unit accused of spreading 'propoganda'.

8. JUDGE DROWNED ON SATNAV JOURNEY

A judge drowned after his wife drove their Toyota Yaris into a heavily flooded Hampshire ford while following satnav directions to a hospital they hadn’t visited before. An inquest was told yesterday that Jonathan Gammon drowned in April after being unable to open the passenger door or window. His wife Priscilla escaped. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

9. SYRIA GOVERNMENT AGREES TO CEASEFIRE

The Syrian government has agreed to a ceasefire over the Muslim festival of Eid, according to international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. He said that some rebel groups that he had been able to contact had also agreed to the idea. It is not clear how long the ceasefire would last. Eid starts on Friday in Syria, but elsewhere in the Arab world, it begins on Thursday.

10. HOT TICKET: FORZA MEETS NEED FOR SPEED

Forza Horizon, a new motor-racing video game from the Forza Motorsport franchise, is released in the UK this week. The spin-off game, set at a fictitious motor-racing festival in Colorado, features open-road racing, realistic driving physics and high-definition graphics. "Breathtaking" says The Observer.
