1. EU head Tusk: Hard Brexit or no Brexit
European Council President Donald Tusk says the UK must choose between a "hard" Brexit or none. Refuting Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson proposal that Britain can "have its cake and eat it" by staying in the single market, Tusk said: "That was pure illusion... To all who believe in it, I propose a simple experiment. Buy a cake, eat it and see if it is still there on the plate."

2. Call for inquiry after gorilla escapes at London zoo
The Born Free Foundation conservation group has called for an "urgent inquiry" into the escape of a gorilla from his enclosure at London Zoo yesterday. Visitors were locked in buildings while staff hunted 29-stone Kumbuka, eventually tranquilising him with a dart gun. The zoo says it is investigating the incident.

3. Clinton calls for landslide to 'rebuke' Trump
Hillary Clinton has called on supporters to give her to a landslide victory in the US presidential race, asking them to help her "have the kind of victory we need" to "rebuke" Donald Trump for his "bigotry and bullying". Trump, meanwhile, says the women who accused him of harassment are "horrible, horrible liars".

4. Nigeria's First Lady speaks out against her husband
Nigeria's First Lady has publicly warned her husband she may not back him at the next election unless he reshuffles his government. President Muhammadu Buhari "does not know" most of the top officials he has put in place since being elected last year on an anti-corruption ticket, says his wife Aisha.

5. Year of mourning for King Bhumibol Adulyadej
Thailand has begun a year of official mourning for King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died in hospital yesterday at the age of 88. People are wearing dark colours, TV channels are showing royal programmes, websites have turned black and white and visitors are being asked to dress in "sombre clothing" and show respect.

6. Rowling to write five Fantastic Beasts films in total
Author JK Rowling says she expects to script a total of five Fantastic Beasts films, the first of which has been shot already and will be released on 17 November. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them stars Eddie Redmayne and is set in the Harry Potter universe. Director David Yates has already signed up for the next film.
7. Footballer Ched Evans cleared of rape
Footballer Ched Evans has been cleared of raping a 19-year-old woman in 2011 following a retrial at Cardiff crown Court. Evans was originally found guilty of rape at Caernarfon Crown Court in 2012, and spend two-and-a-half years in prison, but this conviction was quashed in April. He was found not guilty of the same charge at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday.
8. Dylan makes no mention of Nobel honour
Bob Dylan made no mention of winning the Nobel Prize in Literature on stage in Las Vegas last night, his first concert since the honour was announced. Barely speaking between songs, the first musician to win the award ended his set with an encore of a Frank Sinatra song. His win has been largely well-received.
9. Baby killed and toddler seriously hurt in dog attack
A four-month old boy has been killed and his 22-month old brother seriously injured in a dog attack. The incident happened on Thursday afternoon in Colchester, Essex. The boys' mother was also bitten and suffered minor injuries in the attack. Police said the dog, described by witnesses as similar to a Saffordshire bull terrier, had been put down.
10. Briefing: Sturgeon's second independence referendum
Scotland will publish a draft bill for a second independence
referendum next week, the SNP's Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed. In "a
direct challenge to Theresa May's hardline stance on leaving the EU",
says The Guardian, Scotland's first minister told the Scottish
National Party conference in Glasgow that a second vote should be held
before Britain leaves the EU.
