The win was a bittersweet ending to the season for Blues boss Antonio Conte, who is expected to leave the Stamford Bridge manager’s position after they missed out on qualification to the Champions League.
Chelsea captain Gary Cahill lifted the cup and after the match he told the BBC that the Blues had an aim of “saving their season” at Wembley.
He said: “Unbelievable. You can see what it means to us, to the fans and the staff. This was to save our season, we haven’t had a magnificent season by any stretch. We are used to winning, I’m not saying that in an arrogant way.
“We had a lot of defending to do, they pushed us until the very end. We are buzzing. We got the job done.”

On lifting the trophy, Cahill added: “This a dream come true because it is my first trophy win as captain of the club. It is extra special for me.”
United boss Jose Mourinho, who previously managed Chelsea to an FA Cup final win, thought his team deserved to win the game.
He told the BBC: “I congratulate them because they won but I don’t think they deserved to win. I am Manchester United manager and I have to be respectful, not just because they are my previous club but because they are the opponents today, but I think we deserved to win.
“I am quite curious to know what you say or what people write because if my team plays like Chelsea did I can imagine what people would say. I am quite curious.”
