Netflix has a great entertainment programme lined up to ease viewers into the longer autumn nights. From hit series returns to new original films, here are the best new shows to watch in September:
Narcos: Season 3We pick up the gripping story of the battle between American law enforcement and Colombian drug lords. Following the death of the formidable Pablo Escobar, DEA agent Javier Pena (Pedro Pascal) turns his attention to Escobar's successors, the Cali Cartel. From 1 September.

Strong IslandIn this Netflix original true crime story, filmmaker Yance Ford investigates the racially motivated killing of his brother William in 1992. He traces events from his brother's death to the killer's trial and acquittal by an all-white jury, and examines the devastating effect on his family. From 15 September.
American VandalThis eight-part comedy series sets out to parody true crime hits such as Making of a Murderer. The story is about a high school student who claims he's been wrongly accused and expelled for spray-painting his teacher's car. From 15 September.
First They Killed My FatherWritten by Jolie and Loung Ung, and based on Ung's memoir, First They Killed My Father recounts the horrors suffered by the Cambodian author as a child under the rule of the brutal Khmer Rouge. From 15 September.
Jerry Before SeinfeldThe first of two Netflix specials delves into Jerry Seinfeld's past with stand-up specials set in Jerry's old haunt The Comic Strip, a New York Comedy Club where he launched his career. His autobiographical set looks back at his early days. From 19 September.
Jack Whitehall: Travels with my FatherEnglish stand-up comedian Jack Whitehall finds the comic potential in going on holiday with his less adventurous father (former theatre agent Michael Whitehall). The pair try to complete Jack's curtailed gap year by travelling the world, clubbing, staying in shabby hostels and even getting tattoos. From 22 September.
The Bad BatchThe follow-up to Iranian director Ana Lily Amirpour's haunting debut A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night is an even stranger cannibal love story set in a dystopian future. It's also a chance for Game of Thrones fans to catch a glimpse of Jason Momoa (Drogo) before his blockbuster Aquaman hits the screens later this year. From 22 September.
Star Trek: Discovery, Season 1The long-awaited reboot of the Star Trek series franchise features a new ship, new characters and new intergalactic adventures. It's set 10 years before Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise, as the USS Discovery investigates new worlds and alien life. Jason Isaacs and Sonequa Martin head the cast of space voyagers. From 25 September.
Blue is the Warmest ColourWhen it won the Palme d’Or in 2013, the film caused a stir, partly for being one of the most sexually explicit films to take the prize, but also because of comments made by its stars Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos about their troubled relationship with the French director Abdellatif Kechiche. Nevertheless, this erotic coming-of-age story won praise for its raw, honest and compelling lead performances. From 25 September.
Designated Survivor: Season 2Kiefer Sutherland is back as Tom Kirkman, a minor public servant who becomes US President when everyone in the line of succession dies in a terrorist attack. Kirkman is in charge but his family is in danger. Get ready for more action-packed presidential drama, with new episodes weekly from 28 September.
Our Souls at NightRobert Redford and Jane Fonda star in this twilight years romance about two 70-somethings, Louis and Addie, a widower and a widow. The two have been polite-but-distant neighbours for years, until Addie decides they should start a relationship. From 29 September.
