Whispers of a plot by a slew of “Red Wall” Tory MPs to defect to the Labour Party were initially dismissed by most political pundits after emerging at the start of this month.
But while the “chicken run” predicted by The Mail on Sunday has yet to occur, the first breakaway MP added to Boris Johnson’s growing list of political woes this week.
The first Tory defection to Labour in 15 years came as Westminster anxiously awaits the report on Sue Gray’s investigation into “partygate”. The probe findings are due to be published next week, and seem unlikely to stem calls for a vote of no confidence in the prime minister.
