Man Utd transfer news: Luke Shaw refusing to rush new contract

Luke Shaw is out to negotiate a new and improved contract with Manchester United following his recent successes on the pitch.

The 23-year-old defender’s fortunes faltered last season, with Jose Mourinho preferring Ashley Young in his starting line-up - helping the veteran prove his form to win a place in the England World Cup squad.

But with Young allowed an extended holiday after the Three Lions’s run to the semi-finals in Russia, Shaw was given a chance by Mourinho to show what he could do. His impressive performances have in turn helped Shaw secure a call-up for the England squad for the games against Spain and Switzerland in September.

Meanwhile, Young has been dropped by Gareth Southgate.

Asked why Shaw had been recalled for the first time in 18 months, the England boss said: “He has had a difficult period adapting to a new club, a horrendous injury, but he has had an extra edge to his game… I’m really pleased for him that he looks like he’s playing with confidence.”

Won’t be rushed

United now want Shaw to sign an extension to his contract, which expires at the end of this season, but according to the Daily Mirror, his agent has warned the club “that he will not be rushed into signing a new deal”.

The left-back, who comes with a £30m price tag, has been linked to Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham in recent months, and is biding his time as he weighs up his options.

The newspaper reports that “he won’t ink a new long-term deal until he is convinced that the club see him as their long-term solution at left-back”.

If those assurances aren’t forthcoming in the next few months, Shaw is tipped to leave Old Trafford “and start afresh elsewhere next season”.
