In this age of reboots and franchises, a sequel to a hit movie should never come as a surprise — but last year's Boyhood might not seem like the most obvious for a follow-up. Nevertheless, it could happen: in a recent interview on the podcast Jeff Goldsmith's Q&A, director Richard Linklater admitted that he's considering making a Boyhood sequel following his main character, Mason Jr., through his twenties.
"The 20s are pretty formative, you know? That’s where you really do become who you're going to be," said Linklater. "It's one thing to grow up and go to college, but it’s another thing... So, I will admit my mind has drifted towards [a sequel]."
Linklater added that a follow-up wouldn't necessarily need to repeat the 12-year conceit that propelled Boyhood — so if he does decide to make a Boyhood sequel, there's a decent chance we'd see it before 2027.
