Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader and its most infamous non-A-Rod villain, has asked Major League Baseball to lift his lifetime ban, according to CBS' Jon Heyman.

"I do have a formal request from Pete. I will be in communications with his representatives," new MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday, adding he was "prepared to deal with that request on its merits."

MLB banned Rose for life in 1989 for betting on baseball. Rose has sought in the past to have the ban lifted, all to no avail. This is the first time he's asked the new commissioner for reinstatement since Manfred took baseball's top job in January.
