Police officers shot dead in Silicon Valley, central Wisconsin
On Tuesday evening, in unrelated incidents 2,000 miles apart, two law enforcement officers were shot and killed, one in San Jose, California, the other in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.
In San Jose, police officers responding to a report about a man threatening to kill himself were met with gunfire, and a veteran police officer was struck and killed. The San Jose PD and other local law enforcement agencies have shut down several blocks to search for the killer. The unidentified officer is the 12th killed in the line of duty since the San Jose department was founded in 1849, the Los Angeles Times reports.
In Fond du Lac, a suspected bank robber and carjacker fatally shot a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper who had spotted the stolen vehicle he was driving. The suspect was also killed in the shootout. The incident started with an armed bank robbery in the village of Wausaukee just before 2 p.m., and included two carjackings — the robber is also believed to have killed the driver of the second stolen car — before the final exchange of gunfire. Police said that no other suspects are being sought.
