Pope Francis arrived in Washington, D.C. shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, marking the first leg of his first-ever visit to the United States. The pope was greeted by President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, daughters Sasha and Malia, and Catholic cardinals and bishops when he landed at Joint Base Andrews.

Over the next two days, the pontiff will lead a papal mass and address a joint session of Congress. His next stops are New York, where he will speak at the 9/11 memorial, and Philadelphia, where he will conduct a mass at the World Meeting of the Families.
