This is, largely, what retirement has looked like for former New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter:

After ending his 20-year baseball career last year, Jeter has taken on what he calls another job — caring for his 100-pound Mastiff named Kane. A young dog of that size sounds like it could be a challenge for even the most experienced of dog owners, but for Jeter, adjusting to owning Kane also meant tackling his lifelong fear of dogs:

When I first got Kane, I panicked a little. I'm lying. Actually, I panicked a lot. We had some epic standoffs at the beginning. He was energetic, thought he was king of the house, and I was a nervous owner. Kane would bite and nip and not pay attention to anything I said. My panicking was probably making him panic. This month, he turns one, and now weighs over 100 pounds. But despite his size, he still tries to sit on my lap. Over the last year, the more we get used to each other, the calmer we've both become. [The Players' Tribune]

Jeter may be a retiree, but, as he puts it, thanks to Kane, he's still learning "new tricks." Read Jeter's full story about Kane at The Players' Tribune.
