In shipping 25,000 pounds of low-enriched uranium to Russia, Iran took a "significant step" toward complying with the nuclear agreement the nation made with the U.S. and other world powers, Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement Monday.
"This removal of all this enriched material out of Iran is a significant step toward Iran meeting its commitment to have no more than 300 kilograms of low-enriched uranium by Implementation Day," Kerry said.
In exchange for the export, Russia gave Iran natural uranium, Politico reports. As part of the nuclear deal, which is expected to fully go into effect in January, the U.S. and other nations agreed to lessen economic sanctions if Iran follows clear steps to curb its nuclear program.
