Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders called Saturday for the resignation of Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) over a slow response to Flint's water contamination crisis, The Washington Post reports. Due to lead contamination, the city of 100,000 cannot use tap water.
Though state officials are only recently addressing the issue, the contamination dates back to 2014, when the city switched its water source.
"There are no excuses," Sanders said in a statement. "The governor long ago knew about the lead in Flint's water. He did nothing. As a result, hundreds of children were poisoned. Thousands may have been exposed to potential brain damage from lead. Gov. Snyder should resign."
