The FBI has joined the investigation into Flint's drinking water crisis, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Tuesday. The FBI will be working with a multi-agency team to "determine if there have been any federal violations," FBI spokeswoman Jill Washburn told The Associated Press. Washburn declined to comment on when exactly the FBI got involved, but said that the FBI has been investigating it "for a while."

Flint's water became contaminated in 2014 when the city switched its water source to cut costs. The elevated lead levels found in the water can lead to behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and kidney ailments.
