On Thursday, North Korea fired multiple short-range missiles or artillery into the Sea of Japan, one day after the United Nations passed its toughest sanctions against the country in two decades.

A spokesman for South Korea's defense ministry said the launches came from the eastern town of Wonsan, and they are gathering more information on the incident, The Guardian reports. The sanctions were negotiated by the U.S. and China, and came after North Korea launched a rocket in February and held a nuclear test in January. The sanctions include mandatory inspections of cargo leaving and entering North Korea and a ban on all small arms sales and transfers to Pyongyang.
