Donald Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort has resigned, the campaign announced Friday. "I am very appreciative for [Manafort's] great work in helping us get to where we are today, and in particular his work guiding us through the delegate and convention process," Trump said in a statement. "Paul is a true professional and I wish him the greatest success."

On Wednesday, Manafort was demoted in the campaign after Trump hired Breitbart News executive chairman Stephen Bannon as campaign CEO and elevated adviser Kellyanne Conway to campaign manager. Trump had reportedly felt "boxed in" and "controlled" by operatives, like Manafort, who barely knew him, aides said.

Manafort himself made headlines this week over his concerning ties to pro-Russia Ukrainian politicians, as speculation arose that he may have had a possible hand in Russia's annexation of Crimea.
