After making landfall at about 1:30 a.m. near St. Marks, Florida, as a Category 1 hurricane, Hermine was downgraded to a tropical depression early Friday morning. The storm is heading into southern Georgia from the crook of the panhandle on Florida's Gulf Coast, moving toward the Carolinas at about 14 miles per hour. Hermine was the first hurricane to hit Florida since Wilma, a Category 3 storm that passed through in October 2005. There were projected to be storm surges as high as 12 feet, though CNN says in the report below that the swells reached a still-damaging 8 feet.
Neither Josh Replogle from The Associated Press, reporting from Apalachicola, nor CNN's Polo Sandoval have been able to reach St. Marks yet, and it's unclear the damage sustained. You can watch Sandoval's report below. Peter Weber
