New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced at a Monday afternoon press conference that authorities are increasingly convinced the bombings Saturday in New York City's Chelsea neighborhood and New Jersey's Seaside Park were terrorism-related. "We have every reason to believe this was an act of terror," de Blasio said.
The conference came hours after police took suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami into custody in Linden, New Jersey, after a shootout that injured two officers. The investigation is still underway, but de Blasio said there is "no indication" at this point that there is a terror cell operating in the area, something officials had previously feared. Authorities are not seeking any other individual at this time.
Rahami, a 28-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen born in Afghanistan, was identified by police after surveillance footage showed him near the locations of both bombs planted in Chelsea; only one of the two bombs detonated, injuring 29 people near West 23rd Street.
