The man shot Wednesday night during a protest in Charlotte, North Carolina, that turned violent died Thursday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced.

Police say they found Justin Carr, 26, suffering from a gunshot wound, as they responded to a call of assault with a deadly weapon at around 8:30 p.m. Carr had been shot in the head, WBTV reports. After Carr was taken to the hospital on Wednesday, the city of Charlotte erroneously announced that he had died, but later tweeted that he was in critical condition and on life support. The shooting was "civilian on civilian," the city said, and police have not revealed if there is a suspect. The incident took place during the second night of protests surrounding the fatal officer-involved shooting Tuesday of Keith Lamont Scott.
