White House statement on Iran attacks: 'States that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote'

On Wednesday, Iran was rocked by twin attacks in the capital city of Tehran that left at least 12 people dead and dozens more wounded. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks, during which one group of assailants targeted Iran's parliament building and another the tomb of the Islamic republic's founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. All six known attackers were killed, and five suspects were detained, The New York Times reports.
On Wednesday afternoon, the White House released a statement on the attacks, saying, "We grieve and pray for the innocent victims." The statement concluded, however, with a seeming indictment of the Iranian victims: "We underscore that states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote."
Defense Secretary James Mattis has called Iran the world's "biggest state sponsor of terrorism." Read the Trump administration's full statement below. Kimberly Alters
