A 24-story apartment building in West London went up in flames early Wednesday morning and "a number of people are being treated for a range of injuries," London Metropolitan Police said. (UPDATE: London's fire commissioner said there are "a number of fatalities" from the fire, without providing any estimates.)
The 120-unit Grenfell Tower is about a mile away from Kensington Palace and part of the Lancaster West housing estate. Fire officials say 40 fire engines and 200 firefighters have been dispatched to fight the inferno, and witnesses described hearing people screaming for help from the windows. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
