Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart, late Cuban leader Fidel Castro's eldest son, died by suicide Thursday, Cuban state-run media reported. He was 68. The younger Castro was known as "Fidelito" because of his strong resemblance to his father.

He had been hospitalized for depression and was in outpatient treatment. Born in 1949 to Fidel Castro and his first wife, Mirta Diaz-Balart, Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart was a nuclear physicist, trained in the Soviet Union. From 1980 to 1992, he was in charge of Cuba's national nuclear program. At the time of his death, he was a scientific counselor to the Cuban Council of State and vice president of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.
