A fire broke out in a residential portion of Trump Tower in New York City Saturday evening, leaving one man dead. The victim, Todd Brassner, 67, was a resident of the building. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and died shortly thereafter. Six firefighters were injured, none seriously, before the blaze was put out.
President Trump responded to the fire on Twitter:
Trump Tower apartments were built before sprinklers were required for New York skyscrapers and have not been retrofitted with a sprinkler system. Trump was among the developers who lobbied against the sprinkler system mandate in the late 1990s.
