Aquaman just had one of the best Christmas Day box office performances ever

Aquaman.

Aquaman is the one true king of the 2018 Christmas Day box office.

The superhero film from Warner Bros. had a great Dec. 25 showing, grossing $22.1 million on Tuesday, per The Hollywood Reporter. Forbes points out that this is the sixth largest Christmas Day gross of all time, behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Avatar, and Sherlock Holmes. Aquaman has thus far made a strong $105 million at the domestic box office, although that's below the $120 million that last week's enthusiastic projections suggested it might reach by now.

Meanwhile, Disney's Mary Poppins Returns came in second with a Christmas Day haul of $11.6 million — a solid showing, but also below expectations. Disney can hope that the film continues to perform well in the coming days, as The Greatest Showman did last year after a muted holiday debut.

The Transformers spin-off Bumblebee came in third place with $8.8 million on Christmas. This is once again below last week's projections.

Holmes & Watson, which opened on Christmas Day, did surprisingly well considering its zero percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, bringing in $6.4 million on Tuesday. Its good fortunes seem unlikely to continue, however, since it clearly benefited from its strategy of opening without any critic screenings.

Finally, the Dick Cheney biopic Vice, which also opened on Christmas, came in fifth and grossed $4.8 million, although with audiences giving it an average rating of C+, it proved to be as divisive as expected.
