The dazzling diamond Lady Gaga wore to the Oscars was last seen on Audrey Hepburn

Lady Gaga made a statement on the red carpet Sunday night, and this time, it wasn't for wearing meat as a dress.

The Best Actress nominee shined in an Alexander McQueen dress and the most dazzling of jewels: the 128.54-carat Tiffany & Co. yellow diamond known as "The Tiffany Diamond." This is only the third time the diamond has ever been worn, and the first time on a red carpet: Audrey Hepburn sported it in 1961 for Breakfast at Tiffany's promotional images, and before that, Mrs. Sheldon Whitehouse wore it to the 1957 Tiffany Ball in Newport, Rhode Island, W Magazine reports.

Discovered in South Africa in 1877, Charles Lewis Tiffany bought the diamond for $18,000 in 1878; it was then made into a cushion-cut with 82 facets. The diamond, which has made appearances at museums and jewelry fairs, was actually up for sale in 1972, with Tiffany asking $5 million for it (that's $30 million today), but there were no takers.
