Pete Buttigieg spent his Sunday at church with Jimmy Carter
Former President Jimmy Carter can be found most weekends teaching Sunday School at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, and this Sunday, he was joined by Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten.
Buttigieg is the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Carter said the two met when Buttigieg volunteered at a Habitat for Humanity project in the state. Carter asked Buttigieg to read from the Bible during his lesson, and Buttigieg later tweeted that he was "humbled" to have spent time at church with Carter. "He is a true public servant and America is blessed for his continuing leadership," he said.
Buttigieg's campaign said the visit was unannounced, and the mayor also had lunch with Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, with the group enjoying "a conversation about topics ranging from faith to the rigors of the campaign trail." Buttigieg isn't the only 2020 candidate to visit the church — Carter said Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) have also attended Sunday School, The Associated Press reports.
