U.S. Open: Serena Williams defeats Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-1
Serena Williams came out on top Monday night at the U.S. Open, beating Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-1.
The game lasted 59 minutes, and Williams' serve clocked in at a high of 115 mph. Sharapova, who has five major singles titles under her belt, came into the match ranked 87th, as an injury to her right shoulder caused her to miss much of the season. Earlier this month, Williams was having back spasms that caused her to withdraw from a tournament, but before Monday's match she told reporters she felt good and was "excited" to play.
Williams has 23 major singles titles and has won the U.S. Open six times. She made headlines last year when during the final match, which she lost in straight sets to Naomi Osaka, she fought with chair umpire Carlos Ramos, who docked her a point for breaking a racket and told her she could not receive coaching signals; Williams in turn told Ramos he was a "thief" and a "liar."
