New sanctions will force 'Iran to simply behave like a normal nation,' Pompeo says
The U.S. is imposing "additional sanctions" on Iran "as a result of the attack on U.S. and allied troops," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced Friday.
The new round of sanctions imposed via executive order will target individuals working with "sectors of the Iranian economy including construction, manufacturing, textiles, and mining," Mnuchin said. More sanctions will go after "Iran's largest steel and iron manufacturers," as well as Iranian senior officials who assisted in a recent missile attack. These sanctions will continue "until Iran stops its terrorist activities and commits that it will never have nuclear weapons," Mnuchin continued.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo went on to say the sanctions are aimed at getting "Iran to simply behave like a normal nation." The sanctions are a response to Iran's missile attacks on Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops, which came after the U.S. assassinated Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani last week.
