Immigration was been at the centre of Trump's campaign, with the Republican especially targeting migrants arriving from south of the US. "When Mexico sends their people [to the US], they are not sending their best. They are bringing drugs, they are bringing crime, they're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people," he said during his campaign launch in 2015.

One of Trump's first acts in office was to sign an executive order authorising the construction of a large wall along the US-Mexico border in order to keep out illegal immigrants. On the campaign trail, he told supporters he would "make Mexico pay for that wall", although the Mexican government has strongly rejected the idea of funding the protect, which could cost up to $20bn.
