Lending any room the elegance of an Italian villa, matte-finished terracotta tiling inevitably brings an air of rustic chic after decorating homes around the world for thousands of years.
With these rich, deep-orange squares, you can replicate several distinct cultural trends, from Roman to Mexican, using them as a base around which to fill your home with style.
Escapism
A fashion that is already starting to take hold, "escapism" could be the biggest new design philosophy next year.
Designers are eager to create spaces within the home where digital distractions such as TVs, computers and mobile phones can't get in. Instead, the focus is on comfort and quiet.
As such, Domain says, "relaxed furniture and materials will follow suit, from deep sofas with linen slip covers to oversized love seats, day beds, Icelandic sheepskins, chunky knit wool rugs and floor cushions". Perfect for losing yourself in.
Aquatic
According to boho-glam blog SwoonWorthy, "we're seeing a move to the cooler end of the spectrum with pearl whites, dusty blues, shades of green and of course pale grey which never seems to go out of style".
The great thing about design schemes such as this is that the degree of intensity can vary wildly - a touch of sea-green paint here, a fully realised aquatic scene complete with "seascapes or beach photography" there, or even "motifs of the sea like fish, coral and shells", says the site.
Limited urban space
House prices in many large cities means many people are having to downsize their dream home – but that isn't stopping them from having beautiful spaces in which to live.
By adopting a minimalist, intelligent design even the smallest homes "can be turned into not only functional and comfortable dwelling, but also can by stylish, innovative and modernly fashionable representative of contemporary design", says InteriorZone. Think fold-up beds, ladders, lots of light and flexible functionality.
Navy instead of black
If you're looking to "accent your room or update your kitchen cabinets", you should consider the often-overlooked navy blue as a great pair to most colour schemes, says Elle Decor.
Rich, deep blue "lends mystery to a space without making it feel small (as black sometimes does)", says the mag. It also goes particularly well with the aquatic trend, making your home bang on-trend.
