Blockbusters to look forward to: The must-see films for 2017
From war epics to sci-fi movies, and warrior princesses to thunder gods, Hollywood has plenty to tempt us to the big screen
It's already been a big year for blockbusters, with films like Beauty and the Beast, The Fate of the Furious and Logan pulling in major crowds, but it's not over yet. This year is shaping up to be a bumper year for movie fans, with a host of exciting films still to come.
Wonder Woman
DC Comic's superheroine is coming to the big screen with Israeli actor Gal Gadot (The Fast and the Furious) in the title role. The origins tale goes back to when Wonder Woman was actually Diana, a highly trained warrior princess of the Amazons. When an American pilot (Chris Pine) crashes on the sheltered island where she lives, Diana learns about a conflict destroying the outside world. Against the warnings of her fellow islanders, she decides to leave home to fight, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Releases on 2 June.
Alien Covenant
Ridley Scott's new film is a sequel to Prometheus, as well as the second instalment in the Alien prequels. The sci-fi horror follows the crew of the spaceship Covenant as they transport frozen embryos to a human colony on a distant planet. When the ship receives a distress signal from the Prometheus expedition, which disappeared 10 years earlier, they go to investigate, putting their lives and mission at risk of a deadly threat. Stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterson, Billy Crudup, and lots of terrifying CGI.
Opens in the UK on 12 May.
Dunkirk
The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan takes on a different type of hero in this WWII nail-biter featuring Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh and Harry Styles. It follows the story of the evacuation of 400,000 Allied troops from the French town before the Nazis took hold. The big question is whether Nolan can score a hit with a fantasy free story about such serious subject matter.
Opens on 21 July.
Thor: Ragnarok
The third instalment in Marvel's Thor trilogy sees Chris Hemsworth back in his leather armour as the 'thunder god', but this time he's imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his hammer. Thor must now defeat the Hulk in a gladiatorial battle in time to save the city of Asgard from villainess Hella (Cate Blanchett) and the impending Ragnarok – a series of catastrophic events set to destroy the Asgardian civilisation.
Opens on 27 October.
The Mummy
Tom Cruise stars as an American soldier stirring up ancient mayhem in this reboot of the Mummy franchise. When an ancient tomb is disturbed by the US Army in the present day, a princess (Sofia Boutella) is reawakened and more determined than ever to satisfy her malevolent desire for power. Co-stars Peaky Blinder's Annabelle Wallis and Russell Crowe. Opens on 9 June.
Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi
No blockbuster slate would be complete without a Star Wars film. Episode eight of the franchise picks up where the last movie ended as Daisy Ridley's Rey meets the legendary Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill reprising his iconic role). But is the Jedi warrior the saviour the Rebel Alliance have been looking for, or has he turned to the dark side?
Opens 15 December.
