Jo Cox: The Labour MP remembered one year on

One year on from the murder of Jo Cox, tributes have flooded in to support the Labour MP's belief that "we are far more united and have far more in common than that which divides us".

Cox was killed a week before the EU referendum last year, shot and stabbed while carrying out constituency duties in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Today's anniversary of her death has been marked with tweets quoting from her now-famous maiden speech in the House of Commons in 2015.

Her life will be celebrated with the Great Get Together, a series of picnics, concerts and street parties held around the country, the BBC reports.

More than 110,000 events have been planned, says the Jo Cox Foundation says, which hopes to inspire the biggest neighbourhood celebrations since the Jubilee street parties.

Speaking on the anniversary of his wife's death, Brendan Cox said her murder "took the heart" out of his family, but had not broken them, the Daily Telegraph reports.

He also posted a simple tweet showing a photograph of the MP next to their houseboat on the Thames.

In what the Daily Mirror says is an "unprecedented" move, the UK's last four prime ministers filmed a joint declaration of support for the Great Get Together for Channel 4’s The Last Leg tonight.

David Cameron, Gordon Brown, Tony Blair and John Major all spoke about the importance of tolerance and compassion.

"Jo was strong for those who were weak," Brown said. "Jo included those who were excluded. Jo was passionate about those who needed and deserved our compassion. And Jo has this in common with all of us - that we do feel the pain of others."

A similar show of unity saw rival newspapers The Sun and the Daily Mirror teamed up to print the same editorial in support of the Great Get Together, as did the editors of the Daily Telegraph and The Guardian.
