Timeless appeal: Victorinox Airboss
The new black Airboss editions from Victorinox are a lesson in durable style
Few brands are as synonymous with a product as Victorinox and the Swiss Army Knife. Patented by the brand in 1897, the iconic foldable tool favoured by the military and everyday adventurers alike has over the decades incorporated everything from the handy can opener to thermometers, alarms and more. It has even earned its place in the London Design Museum's permanent collection, and been displayed in New York's Museum of Modern Art. Whatever you might need, you know it has you covered.
A similar utilitarian approach can be seen across the brand's diverse range of products, counting among them luggage, clothing and timepieces. Like the Swiss Army Knife, they seamlessly blend form and function, designed with purpose and built to last. Nowhere is this more evident to see than in the Airboss, its series of aviation-inspired watches. Taking its title from the nickname given to the countdown commander of an aircraft carrier – a role that demands the ultimate in accuracy – these timepieces connote reliability and accuracy whether worn in the skies or to the office.
Three all-black additions to the line bring a versatile new look while retaining the legibility of the original, made over with a matte, sandblasted PVD finishing that lends a contemporary edge. Each retains the hallmarks of the Airboss's design, from the 24-hour, military time denoted on the dial to the easy-to-read red second hand.

Topping the list in terms of functionality is the Airboss Mach 9, which takes its cues from aeronautical engineering. Powered by a trusty Valjoux 7750 automatic movement, the 45mm-diameter timepiece brings together a chronograph, 30-minute and 12-hour counters, in addition to a bezel-controlled slide rule. Meanwhile, a second chronograph model offers a more pared-back take, retaining the essential features of the former, including water resistance to 100 metres and scratch-resistant stainless sapphire crystal complete with anti-reflection treatment.
Perhaps the most versatile of all, however, is a classic three-hander. Its stripped-back aesthetic makes it the ideal everyday go-to, with a neutral colour palette that can be paired with multiple outfits with ease. Combined with its hardwearing credentials, you don't need to be military to appreciate its rugged charms.
