High-rollers looking to upgrade their home theatre set-ups are in luck as Sony has just announced an updated version of its short throw projector.

Unlike the majority of projectors which need to be fixed to the ceiling or to sit on an elevated shelf, Sony’s short throw products can be positioned just three metres from the wall, according to Engadget.

The tech company has also added six speakers into the projector that deliver 360-degree audio that replicates sound coming from different directions. The set-up consists of two glass tweeters for high-pitched sounds, three mid-range speakers and a sub-woofer.

The speakers and projector are housed in a compact box that resembles a coffee table. With its aluminium legs and wooden shelf, it looks more like a piece of furniture than a hi-tech gadget.

Sony’s projector doesn’t come cheap. The device has a $30,000 (£22,000) price tag and is $5,000 (£3,700) more expensive than the previous model, says The Verge.

But if you’re in the market for the very best in home cinema technology, the new Sony short throw might be the perfect option for transforming your space.

Right now it’s only available in the US, but it could arrive in UK stores at a later date.
