Charity of the week: Starkey Hearing Foundation

Each year the foundation fits more than 100,000 hearing aids to people of all ages.

Disabling hearing loss affects more than 360 million people worldwide, including 32 million children. The Starkey Hearing Foundation (starkeyhearingfoundation.org) travels the U.S. and the world to deliver the life-changing gift of hearing to people in need. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the foundation currently fits more than 100,000 hearing aids to people of all ages each year and has pledged to provide 1 million free hearing aids over the next decade. The foundation also promotes awareness of hearing health through a variety of programs and initiatives. Last month it sponsored an event featuring Seattle Seahawks fullback Derrick Coleman, who spoke about his deafness and helped fit children with hearing aids alongside other pro athletes and celebrities.

Each charity we feature has earned a four-star overall rating from Charity Navigator, which rates not-for-profit organizations on the strength of their finances, their control of administrative and fundraising expenses, and the transparency of their operations. Four stars is the group’s highest rating.
