Nearly 60 percent of all jobs added during the post-2008 economic recovery have been in low-paid professions such as retail sales and food preparation, with hourly wages ranging from $7.69 to $13.83, said a new study for the National Employment Law Project.

Paul Ryan's marathon

After Paul Ryan claimed in an interview to have run a marathon in under three hours—a superb time achieved by few first-time marathoners—Runner’s World found records showing that Ryan’s time was actually four hours and one minute. Ryan’s spokesman acknowledged his mistake, saying he reported the time to “the best of his recollection,” and that the “race was more than 20 years ago.”

Apple rejects drone app

An iPhone app that allows users to track U.S. drone strikes around the globe has been rejected three times by the Apple store for “objectionable content.” The Drones+ app sends text alerts of media reports on drone strikes, and displays a map showing where strikes have taken place.

How kids spend their allowance

American kids are given an average of $15 a week in allowance, according to a recent survey. Some 61 percent of all parents pay an allowance, and more than half start making these payments when their children are just 8 years old. Only 1 percent of kids save any of their allowance money, with most of them immediately buying toys and candy.

Ireland faces a priest shortage

Parishioners in some parts of Ireland have started to lead Catholic Masses, because of an acute shortage of priests. Only 16 Irish men enrolled in seminaries in 2012, down from more than 150 per year in the 1980s.
