A salary review for the Murdochs

News International CEO Rupert Murdoch received a 47 percent pay increase for the last fiscal year. Murdoch took home $33 million, including a $12.5 million cash bonus. His son, James, who is an executive at News International, declined a $6 million bonus “in light of the current controversy” over phone hacking at the News of the World.

Fewer ticket sales for Harry Potter

Even Harry Potter couldn’t work his magic on Holly­wood this year. Box-office attendance fell for the fourth consecutive summer, with 543 million tickets sold, the lowest summer tally since 1997.

Android takes the lead over Apple

Android has extended its lead over the Apple iPhone in the U.S. smartphone market. Google’s operating system now runs on 40 percent of the smartphones in America, compared with Apple’s 28 percent share of the market.

Amazon's tablet-friendly website

Amazon.com, the world’s biggest Internet store—with revenues of $34 billion last year—is overhauling its website to make shopping easier for tablet-computer users. The move will be closely watched by other online retailers ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Wealthy French petition for higher taxes

Last month, 16 of France’s wealthiest people—including L’Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt and Christophe de Margerie, CEO of oil giant Total—published a petition in the French magazine Le Nouvel Observateur urging the French government to raise their taxes.
