Good Day, Bad Day

Minding beeswax, club culture

GOOD DAY FOR: Minding beeswax, as concerns over declining honeybee populations are spreading to corporate boardrooms. Haagen-Dazs plans to raise $250,000 to study the mysterious bee disappearance, following the lead of Burt’s Bees. Bees pollinate about a third of what we eat, and beekeepers have lost about 30 percent of their colonies to disease in the past year. (AP in Yahoo! Finance)

BAD DAY FOR: Club culture, as the number of people playing golf has dropped to 26 million, from 30 million in 2000, with a bigger decline in the number who play 25 times a year or more. “There just isn’t enough time,” said New York real estate developer Walter Hurney. “Men won’t spend a whole day away from their family anymore.” (The New York Times, free registration)
