Moussaoui verdict

The week's news at a glance.

Alexandria, Va.

After four days of deliberations, a federal jury found Zacarias Moussaoui eligible for the death penalty for his role in the 9/11 attacks. The jury agreed with prosecutors that by lying to investigators after his arrest in August 2001, Moussaoui shared responsibility for at least one of the 2,792 deaths the following month. “It doesn’t matter whether he was part of the first wave, part of the second wave or the 20th wave,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney David Novak. “What matters is the knowledge he had.” The jury will now have to decide whether to actually sentence Moussaoui to death. Some 40 relatives of 9/11 victims are expected to testify in the final phase of the trial.
