Evolution on trial

Georgia school officials were challenged in court this week after putting a warning on textbooks that says evolution is “a theory, not a fact.” The Cobb County School District adopted the disclaimer in 2002 to quiet complaints from parents who didn’t want their kids to be taught that evolution, not God, shaped life on earth. But the ACLU sued, claiming that the warning stickers amounted to a government endorsement of creationism. “The religious views of some that contradict science cannot dictate curriculum,” ACLU lawyer Maggie Garrett said as the trial got underway. A school district lawyer, Linwood Gunn, said the sticker was merely a 33-word reminder that kids should keep an “open mind” as they read about evolution. “It doesn’t say anything about religion,” said Gunn.
