Al-Jazeera head sacked
The week's news at a glance.
Doha, Qatar
The editor in chief of Al-Jazeera was fired this week amid reports that the Arab satellite TV station had been infiltrated by Iraqi agents. Mohammed Jassem al-Ali, formerly of Qatar Television, ran Al-Jazeera since its inception in 1996. He will remain on the board of directors but will no longer direct daily coverage. A spokesman for the company said the decision had nothing to do with recent revelations in the London Sunday Times that three Iraqi spies worked for the station. During the war in Iraq, Al-Jazeera often aired exclusive material provided by Iraqi officials, such as footage of dead or captured U.S. soldiers.
