Miss World fatwa
The week's news at a glance.
Zamfara, Nigeria
A Muslim-run Nigerian state has called on Muslims to kill the reporter whose story about the Miss World contest led to deadly riots. Isioma Daniel wrote in the Lagos newspaper This Day that Muslims shouldn’t mind that contestants would pose in swimsuits. “What would Mohammed think?” she wrote. “In all honesty, he would probably have chosen a wife from among them.” In northern states, which have instituted Islamic law, offended Muslims rioted, killing more than 200 people and destroying dozens of churches. More than 10,000 Christians fled for the Christian-dominated south, and the contest was relocated to London. Federal police have arrested Daniel—possibly to protect her from Zamfara state officials. “The holy Koran has clearly stated that whoever insults the Prophet of Islam, Mohammed, should be killed,” said Zamfara commissioner Umar Dangaladima Magaji.
