Wild Hogs
Four middle-aged men set off on a motorcycle trip across America.
Wild Hogs is a true stinker, said Claudia Puig in USA Today. This midlife crisis movie reeks of homophobia, group-think, and desperation. Four stars play average dudes who decide that their suburban lives just aren't macho enough. So they take off on their motorcycles and embarrass themselves across the great United States. Along for the ride are Tim Allen as the overgrown adolescent, Martin Lawrence as the henpecked husband, John Travolta as the braggart, and, tragically, William H. Macy as the nerd. 'œEach fellow's persona seems to have been cobbled together from the Basic Stereotypes Handbook.' Not one actor seems invested in the project, let alone connected to his fellow performers, said Michael Phillips in the Chicago Tribune. In one carnival scene, the distance between Tim Allen's and Martin Lawrence's characters is particularly striking: 'œAllen couldn't be more distracted if he tried; barely glancing at his co-star, he appears to be on the verge of BlackBerrying his agent.' The gags are stupid, and the gay jokes grating, said Connie Ogle in The Miami Herald. But this isn't the worst movie ever made. 'œIt's immediately forgettable but not inordinately painful, more like a routine cleaning at the dentist's than a root canal.'
Rating: PG-13
