A real workhorse for its price, this 8-lb Bissell also does an especially good job pulling pet hair out of carpets. It has no special attachments, but even so, "it's tough to beat the Bissell's combination of value and performance." Buy it at Amazon.

A top performer among more affordable stick vacuums, the C17 is a Dyson clone that can be a great choice for people with mostly hard-surface floors. It can't compete with the high-end machines on rugs and carpets. Buy it at Amazon.
