Today’s back pages: Ireland commit a ‘midsummer Murtagh’ against England at Lord’s

A round up of the sport headlines from UK newspapers on 25 July

It was a day of absolute carnage in London. We’re not talking about Boris Johnson’s cabinet reshuffle, but Ireland’s bowling performance against England at Lord’s.

On the first morning of the four-day Test match England were skittled out for just 85 runs with Ireland’s Tim Murtagh doing the most damage by taking 5-13.

Metro described it as a “midsummer Murtagh” at Lord’s while the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror said England have gone from “champs to chumps”.

The Cricket World Cup winners had a terrible day with the bat with Jason Roy scoring only five on his Test debut, captain Joe Root adding just two and Jonny Bairstow, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali all dismissed for ducks.

In reply Ireland built a 122-run lead after scoring 207 and England finished the day’s play on 0-0 from one over of their second innings.

With the Ashes starting against Australia next week, England will hope to hit back in the final three days of the Test.
