Sri Lanka vs. England 2nd Test: Sam Curran and Jos Buttler star in Kandy
England fight back to finish all out on 285 on day one
Sri Lanka vs. England second Test day one
- England first innings: 285 all out
- Sri Lanka first innings: 26-1 (12.0 overs)
- England lead by 259 runs
England were in trouble early in their first innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka but half-centuries from Jos Buttler and Sam Curran saw them finish the day in a decent position.
Joe Root’s side were 65-3 and 89-4 but Buttler’s 63 from 67 balls steadied the ship. Curran came to the crease with England on 171-7 and he hit six sixes in a superb innings of 64.

Curran’s last-wicket partnership with James Anderson saw 60 runs added to the board as England were bowled out for 285. Dilruwan Perera (4-61) and Malinda Pushpakumara (3-89) starred with the ball for Sri Lanka.
The home side then came out to bat for 12 overs and finished the day on 26-1 - 259 runs behind the tourists. Jack Leach got England’s wicket as he bowled Kaushal Silva for six.
Speaking on the BBC’s TMS podcast former England captain Michael Vaughan said: “It’s been a riveting day. It looks like we’re in for a three-day Test. I can’t see how the pitch will get any better. If Sri Lanka can get close to England, it makes the third innings tricky. I think there’s one low score in this match and if it’s Sri Lanka’s first innings, it’s game over.”
Day two TV and radio coverage
The second day of the second Test in Kandy starts at 4.30am (UK time) on Thursday morning. Sky Sports Cricket’s TV coverage from the Pallekele Cricket Stadium starts at 4.15am and talkSPORT 2’s radio coverage begins at 4am.
