Tall Tales: couple celebrating wedding on New York City subway
The Week's round-up of the latest odd news
Railroaded into marriage
Unable to afford a flashy wedding reception, Daniel Jean and Esmy Valdez recently celebrated their marriage in a New York subway carriage. Passengers riding the L train on 2 July inadvertently became part of the wedding party, which came complete with ivy and sunflower decorations, platters of chicken and mac and cheese, and a five-tiered wedding cake. "I just like the train," the groom told The Washington Post: "There's always something going on in the train."
Goat breed crowned the GOAT
A goat breed has been given a royal title. The Royal Golden Guernsey Goat, a breed known for its connection to the Channel Island, had the accolade bestowed on it by the King during the monarch's visit to Guernsey this week. Such titles "are given sparingly", noted Sky News, "and are so special they even have to be signed off on by the Cabinet Office".
Tattoo tribute an own goal
A football fanatic who got a tattoo saying "England Euro 2024 Winners" ahead of the Three Lions' defeat on Sunday night has said he won't be getting the factually inaccurate design inked over. Dan Thomas said he had "absolutely no regrets", adding that he could always get the date on the design amended if England was to win the next tournament in 2028.
