1. TURKISH BORDER TOWN 'WILL FALL TO I.S'

Civilians have fled street-to-street fighting between Sunni militants (IS) and Syrian Kurds in a key border town between Turkey and Syria, Kobane. A local official told the BBC the town would "certainly fall soon" into the hands of IS. The town is besieged on three sides, with heavy shelling from IS.

2. NURSE CONTRACTS EBOLA VIRUS IN SPAIN

An investigation has been launched at a Madrid hospital after a nurse became the first person known to have contracted the deadly Ebola virus outside of West Africa. The nurse had treated two Spanish missionaries who were flown home for treatment suffering from the disease - they both died in hospital. Three more people in Spain have been put in quarantine.

Ebola: US suit stockpile causes shortage in Africa

3. FOUR ARRESTED IN ANTI-TERROR RAIDS

Four men were this morning arrested in anti-terror raids in London. One of the suspects was tasered during his arrest and firearms officers were present at another of the dawn raids. The men, aged 20 to 21, are being questioned on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

4. CLEGG LOSES LIB DEM AIRPORT VOTE

Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg has been defeated over plans to drop the party's opposition to a new runway at Gatwick Airport. Members at the party conference in Glasgow voted against an amendment to the current policy, which demands "no net increase in runways across the UK as a whole". Clegg will now be bound to oppose airport expansion plans after the general election.

5. DJ 'RAPED TEENAGER WITH JIMMY SAVILE'

A former DJ who worked as Jimmy Savile's chauffer raped a teenager together with the serial sex offender, a court has heard. Ray Teret, now 72, faces 30 sex abuse charges including 18 counts of rape, which date back to the 1960s. Teret, on trial with two other men, was a DJ on Radio Caroline and Piccadilly Radio in Manchester.

6. NOBEL WINNER’S IMMIGRATION WARNING

Prof John O’Keefe, who this week shares the Nobel Prize for medicine, has spoken of his concerns that tough immigration policies are making it harder for talented scientists to enter the UK. O’Keefe, who now holds dual US-UK citizenship, started his career at McGill university in Canada.

7. BANKER ADMITS LIBOR MANIPULATION

A senior employee at a British bank has become the frst person in the UK to plead guilty to criminal manipulation of Libor in Britain. The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faces up to ten years in jail. The Serious Fraud Office began investigating Libor rigging in 2012 after claims bankers were manipulating interest rates in their favour.

8. MORRISSEY REVEALS CANCER TREATMENT

Singer Morrissey has revealed in a newspaper interview in Spain that he has undergone cancer treatment. The former Smiths frontman said doctors had "scraped cancerous tissues four times already", but added: "If I die, then I die. And if I don't, then I don't." The 55-year-old has suffered health problems in recent years but is currently touring Europe.

9. LYNCH CONFIRMS TWIN PEAKS RETURN

Cult TV series Twin Peaks is to return to the small screen after 25 years, its creator David Lynch has confirmed. Lynch used Twitter to link to a teaser video for a new series of the show to air on Showtime in the US in 2016, with the message: “Dear Twitter friends … it is happening again.”

10. HOT TICKET: ENO'S PUCCINI WESTERN

The ENO's new production of Puccini's The Girl of the Golden West has opened at the Coliseum, London. Richard Jones directs Susan Bullock as a pistol-packing, Bible-reading owner of a Californian gold-rush saloon-bar who falls for a dashing outlaw. "Glorious," says the Daily Telegraph. Until 1 November.
