2.2/5 Car buyer “Based on the stylish 6 series, the BMW M6 is a super fast rear-wheel drive coupe that sits at the top of BMW’s performance car tree. With a 4.4-litre, 552bhp V8, the M6 is capable of 0-62mph in just 4.2 seconds. But it actually feels even faster with plenty of power for overtaking at any speed. And with an aggressive body-kit, flared wheel arches and large alloy wheels, it is easy to distinguish from the standard coupe. At the back it comes with unique badging and quad exhausts, and inside BMW’s top-notch build quality is present throughout. However, there’s no avoiding its price tag.”

4/5 What Car? “At the thick end of £100k, the M6 Coupe is mightily expensive for a BMW. That being said, if you place driving dynamics and performance ahead of beauty and image, it’s well worth considering. Floor the throttle and the BMW will storm from 0-63mph in 4.2 seconds with a note from the exhaust system that gets increasingly fruity as you build up the revs. And although the BMW’s top speed is electronically limited to 155mph, from a performance perspective there’s little to match it. Further highlights include BMW’s intuitive iDrive control system, a seven-inch colour screen and a horseshoe arrangement of buttons that lets you switch between the various gearshift, suspension and steering-weight settings.”

With Astons, Porsches and Maseratis among its rivals, the M6 will have a tough time fending off the competition if the goosebump factor figures into your purchasing considerations. Still, with a mind boggling 486 configurable driving parameters, the M6 is a technical tour de force that will take you all the way from boulevard cruiser to track-ready hard nut.”

6/10 Top Gear “This is a car for people who like to go fast, really fast. There’s an option to unshackle it from the speed-limited cap of 155mph, which takes the top end speed to a major-league 190mph. And it’s got the technology to back up the power. Vastly quick and entirely capable, it serves up its speed with a strange diffidence and sense of detachment. Sadly, sensation is lacking and the car doesn’t feel or sound alive. There’s also very little feedback from the controls.”
